Take your passion to the next level by enrolling in our 16 week Foundations of Nutrition Course.

For one Wednesday morning over 16 weeks (9.30am - 12.30pm) you will have the opportunity to join Wellpark College's Faculty of Nutrition and learn more about the history, philosophies and practical approaches of this fascinating subject.

The course is a great opportunity for those thinking about studying Nutrition full time and wanting to gain a taster into the Diploma of Nutrition 2 Year course.

The Foundations of Nutrition course will introduce students to the history of nutrition and the varying philosophical and practical approaches that have arisen as a result of its development. Introductory aspects of nutrition will be discussed with emphasis on the role of the digestive processes involving the macronutrients, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates and their subsequent utilisation by the body.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion the student will be able to:

  1. Outline the contribution of nutrition to special circumstances in life.
  2. Provide rationale for one modern day food philosophy that has developed throughout history and can be recommended to clients today.
  3. Analyse the effect of selected dietary changes through weekly experiments.
  4. Demonstrate consultation skills relating to a number of:
    1. Bowel disorders.
    2. Disorders relating to proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

  3. Proteins – structure, types, uses, deficiencies, health issues
  4. Fats – structure, types, uses, deficiencies, health issues
  5. Carbohydrates – structure, types, uses, deficiencies, health issues
  6. Combinations of macronutrients

 

History and philosophy

  1. Historical aspects in the development of nutrition
  2. Modern approaches to nutrition including supplements
  3. Food philosophies – differing approaches to treatment through nutrition
  4. Traditions in nutrition
